Guard Your Heart

Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the
wellspring of life.”

The heart is often spoken of in God's Word as our innermost being.

Our heart is so much more that just our affections as some think.
It is regarded as being the seat of the intellect, home of our soul, housing our feelings, and marshalling our will.

If you agree with this thinking like I do, then our heart is the starting point of the activities of life; it determines the course of life. Our heart guides and directs all that we do. Every word that comes out of our mouth starts in the heart. All of our actions, behaviors, and choices are driven by the desires of the heart.

The proverb gives us a profound truth. The condition of our heart
(our emotions, our will, our mind) affects everything.

We would like to think that science is unbiased, that reporting is fair minded, or that economics is neutral. But we quickly find that all fields of knowledge have lenses that they assume to be true. Even Chuck C. in AA talked about his “New Pair of Glasses”! That is why the Scripture was given to us as the lens to see the world.
Otherwise, other lenses are there to color our heart and taint the water that comes out of our life. Which lens are you looking through today?
 Are you guarding your heart?
