What are you a slave to?... Have you ever considered that you might be spending too much time in thought, deed, or action with someone or something? Now my 12 Step friends understand this all too well with addictions and obsessions, but we can also become slaves to our jobs, the gym, and even toxic people, places, or things. When we find that most of our time, energy, and efforts are spent chasing someone or something to the point it influences the way we participate in the rest of the parts of our life, we are its slave. Think about it and....Check your experience ... "We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness." Big Book pg 83 Lord let us be free from the chains of the many worldly temptations, AMEN. How we know what we know.... There are all kinds of ways to learn. Memorizing things imprints them in our brain for a needed purpose. Book learning helps to grasp a concept or way of thinking. Cramming for a test gets us through the test. We learn things daily through our experiences. But think about it, how do we KNOW stuff? While we have many ways to learn, the only way we truly ever know anything is by the experience gained that is imprinted in our hearts. This is why the Holy Spirit lives in each of our hearts. God opens our hearts to receive the true knowledge we need, or, if you will, the truth. ... Check your experience. ... "Some of us have taken very hard knocks to learn this truth" Big Book pg 98 Lord, let us willingly open our hearts to be filled with Your knowledge and truth, AMEN. "And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:31-32 Have a blessed day y'all! We have one week until our back to school drive ends. Helping others helps yourself… Whenever we help someone, we are helping ourselves. Helping others is an invitation to give. It’s an insight into where we are at spiritually with our willingness to help others. Finally, this is an incentive to look past our needs and wants to help another person. So while we are built spiritually to give and help others, are we actually willing and able? … Check your experience… “It is not the matter of giving that is in question, but when and how to give.” Big Book pg 98 Lord, thank You for giving so much to us in blessings, favor, and grace, please let us give back by giving to others what we can when we can, AMEN. “He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.” Proverbs 19:17 Have a blessed day y’all! One heart…. We see a lot of credit, responsibility, and focus given to our heart. It’s the source of our spirit, the keeper of our inner most thoughts, and the driving force of our will. It would make sense then to pay attention to what influences and tries to go into our heart. Trying to manage our heart alone is futile. There is simply too much worldly clamor and influences and were become easily overwhelmed, but turning our hearts and minds over to the care of God enables us to be free and protects our hearts from the chaos. How are you protecting your heart? ….Check your experience… “The central fact of our lives today is the absolute certainty that our Creator has entered into our hearts and lives in a way which is indeed miraculous.” Big Book pg 25 Lord, let us examine our hearts daily to be sure we have it tuned into Your will and Word, AMEN. “I will give them one heart and I will put a new spirit within them; I will remove the hearts of stone from their bodies and I will give them tender hearts,” Ezekiel 11:19 Have a blessed day y’all! Que sera sera, whatever will be will be…. What makes the Bible so vibrant and vital to every generation and time period, including today is the fact that despite minor details, there is nothing new that the Bible doesn’t address. Think about it, the character defects of Pride, Anger, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, and Sloth (PAGLEGS to my 12 Step friends) are the driving forces behind every incident of self will here on Earth. God knew this when He created us and knows this to be true of every human because it’s included in the DNA of our free will. Our hope is in the fact that we can turn our will over to the care of God and then these defects of character no longer run our lives and put us into situations that cause us and others pain… check your experience… . “As we go through the day we pause, when agitated or doubtful, and ask for the right thought or action. We constantly remind ourselves we are no longer running the show, humbly saying to ourselves many times each day “Thy will be done.” We are then in much less danger of excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-pity, or foolish decisions. We become much more efficient.” Big Book pgs. 87-88 Lord, let us turn our will and our lives over to you daily and receive grace, peace, comfort, and direction, AMEN. “What has been is the same as what will be, and what has been done is the same as what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 1:9 Have a blessed day y’all! We all have something to contribute… Most of us have a few things that we are good at and a few that …well…it’s probably best if we leave it to others more suited to that skill set. It’s a known fact among my family and friends that I have neither understanding nor purpose to handle tools. Oh I like them, they’re shiny, but I have no clue why Allen has his own named wrenches and Phillip gets his own screwdrivers! Luckily, my family, friends, and ministry partners have found things I am more suited to doing and we balance well off of each other. God gives each of us gifts and talents to not only use to help us while we walk here on Earth, but also to help others He puts in our path. What are your gifts and how are you using them to help yourself and others?... Check your experience…. “Helping others is the foundation stone “ Big Book pg 97 Lord, please use our talents and gifts to help those You put in our path, AMEN. “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 Corinthians 12: 4-7 Have a blessed day y’all!! Have a blessed day y’all!! Start your day on a positive note! The power of forgiveness….. We all experienced this. Fueled by anger, resentment, and or thoughts of revenge, our emotions produce words and actions that we would never allow if we were not caught up in the bad emotions of the moment. Sadly, some folks stay this way for years and it poisons all of the relationships around them. It’s OK to be upset when people, places, and things harm or hurt us, but it’s not ok to continue to replay that moment or event and let it influence the rest of our day, week, or year. The good news is that we can start our day over anytime we want. God makes this possible with His Spirit of forgiveness that lives inside each of us. While some wrongs can never be righted, we do not have to allow then to hold power over the rest of our lives. Are you holding any lingering resentments or allowing anger to influence your actions or relationships?… Check your experience… “It is plain that a life which includes deep resentment leads only to futility and unhappiness.” Big Book pg 66 Lord, let us give our hurts and anger to You in return for the peace and serenity that comes from forgiveness, AMEN. “Instead, be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 Have a blessed day y’all! Faith is not believing that God can...It is in knowing that God will… Wouldn’t it be great if we could wake up every morning with a faxed or emailed itinerary of EXACTLY how our day will go? No more guessing, juggling, and figuring out, just seeing and doing. Unfortunately, we live in a real world with other real people, places, and things that are ALWAYS changing. The good news is that we actually DO have the daily itinerary! It’s in our hearts and all we have to do is drop the expectations on people, places, and things and walk forward in faith, knowing God has the end result covered, all we need to do is participate fully with our hearts. Think about it. Doesn’t your day go so much better when you drop the expectations and just be? … Check your experience… “In this book you read again and again that faith did for us what we could not do for ourselves.” Big Book pg 70 Lord, let us walk in faith and not in expectation, AMEN. "For we walk by faith, not by sight" 2 Corinthians 5:7 Have a blessed day y’all!! Start your day on a positive note! Daily devotions from the Big Book and Bible combined! It’s a matter of the heart… Have you ever heard or used the expressions; “’You’re all heart, ‘; ‘ She has a lot of heart’ ; or ‘bless his heart’”? Hopefully we use and or hear those phrases associated with good thoughts. They are spiritually based and character driven by design. The Bible is full of examples and references to our heart and how we should guard it, allow good to flow from it, and protect it. The fact of the matter is that God not only sees our heart, but also knows what fills it and how it fuels our lives. So, what do you see when you look at your heart? …Check your experience… “Here was something at work in a human heart which had done the impossible.” Big Book pg 11 Lord, open our heats to contain good and grace and remove those things that get in the way of our usefulness to You and those You would have us help, AMEN. “God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 Have a blessed day y’all! Love is all you need…. We have answers and solutions and fixes for just about everything imaginable these days. The internet, TV, and most brick and mortar retail stores have the ability to sell packaged solutions to most any need. I like that “flabs to abs” idea, but I hear tell that ultimately it really requires providing the willingness and effort to eat right and exercise. I am sure it’s the same for most any other challenge or situation we face. To get better it requires our participation and willingness to either change or participate. The bottom line involved in any interaction, positive or negative, is that spiritual emotion or state of being that we all are born with, which is love. If we can bring our love to the situation or task at hand, the Holy Spirit within us can then participate with us and guide us to the healthy outcome we seek. Are you bringing your spiritual love to your situations?.. Check your experience… . “Patience, tolerance, understanding and love are the watchwords.” Big Book pg 118 Lord, let us bring the love in our hearts, supplied by Your Spirit into every situation we face, both good and bad, AMEN. “Love takes everything that comes without giving up. Love believes all things. Love hopes for all things. Love keeps on in all things. Love never comes to an end.” 1 Corinthians 13: 7-8 Have a blessed day y’all! Start your day on a positive note! Take off your shoes…Years ago when I was on staff at Salvation Army as a counselor, I taught a class for the men in the Adult Recovery Center in Sacramento. One of the more popular lessons I taught was called “Take off your shoes” I would post a sign outside of the chapel that served as our classroom asking all who entered to take off their shoes. Everyone complied and no one ever had a serious problem with the request. I would then share with the men how we are always willing and able to comply and participate with general requests, like taking off our shoes. I would then ask them to think about why they did not feel the need to demand to know what kind of shoes I was asking them to take off. Would sandals qualify or be excused? What about sneakers and boots? The point I was making for the class was that we all put something on our feet and even though it may be a boot, sneaker, or sandal, it’s still just a shoe with the main purpose of protecting our feet. I then used this understanding to hone in on the fact that whether it is alcohol, cocaine, pills, meth, heroin, or other chemicals, we are all addicted to something and we all have that in common and need to band together to recover. Driving home the point that we all put something inside of us to numb ourselves to the outside world. Now folks, I am NOT politically motivated, and those who know me best know that I am color blind with respect to skin and race. So my point today is that we are all living and breathing humans, so why can’t we band together to help one another instead of all this senseless nonsense…Check your experience… “The point is, that we are willing to grow along spiritual lines.” Big Book pg 60 Lord, let us remember we are all Your children and one bit Earthly family, AMEN. “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28 Lord, let us remember we are all Your children and one bit Earthly family, AMEN. “The point is, that we are willing to grow along spiritual lines.” Big Book pg 60. Is this available on Amazon or at the Wal-Mart?... Wouldn’t it be great if we could just order wisdom online, download it to our mind computer and keep on moving? Heck, even buying the CD and watching it would… no wait, lot’s of late night ads are already trying this and I don’t think it’s delivering on the desired effect all too well. So what is the secret to getting wisdom? I am still trying to figure that part out, but I can share from my own experience as well as watching and learning from others, that wisdom comes from learning, applying, and gaining experience. We have a great Book of knowledge that contains many skills, lessons, and insights, but it takes a commitment to read it, share it, and practice the principles it contains. It’s a good thing to have a Bible, but we can’t gain from it until we learn from it and apply it you our lives. How’s that working out for you?.. Check your experience... “We have learned that whatever the human frailties of various faiths may be; those faiths have given purpose and direction to millions. People of faith have a logical idea of what life is all about.” Big Book pg 49 Lord open our minds and hearts with willingness and a thirst to learn from Your Word, AMEN. “Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.” Proverbs 4:7 Have a blessed day y’all! Start your day on a positive note! Daily devotions from the Big Book and Bible combined! 2 hands are better than 1… In my experience I have learned that most things seem to get accomplished more efficiently when another person is involved. From raising Miss Kai to making decisions on ministry, career, finance, and other things, I have benefited from seeking and using the wise counsel of Miss Tami and many others I am blessed to have in my life. Along the way I have learned that I am really never alone, so when I am faced with the need to make an instant choice or decision, I can rely on the Holy Spirit residing in me to guide my thoughts and direct my actions. I am not perfect and my self will still gets in the way more than it should, but at least I know that I do have the ability to seek God’s will and not rely on my own. How’s that working out for you?.. Check your experience.. “Then I will ask My Father and He will give you another Helper. He will be with you forever.” John 14:16 Lord, let us look to You Holy Spirit to show us how to navigate the many choices, decisions, and temptations we face daily, AMEN. “What was our choice to be?” Big Book pg 53 Have a blessed day y’all! “You can go your own way”…. A great song by Fleetwood Mac. It’s great to be independent and it’s our nature to be self-sufficient and self-supporting. Yet, we still need to get our guidance and direction from somewhere in order to continue to be successful. Think about it. In most areas of our lives we are given parameters, instructions, boundaries, and or guidelines. We then learn by doing as well as being shown. Finally experience gives us the confidence and comfort we need in knowing that we are able to succeed. The Lord molds us and shapes us when we are willing into who and what He needs us to be. Where are you getting your direction and guidance from? …Check your experience… “Next, we decided that hereafter in this drama of life, God was going to be our Director.” Big Book pg 62 Lord, please mold us into the masterpieces You have designed each of us to be, AMEN. “Yet you, LORD, are our Father. ASK… SEEK… KNOCK… These are powerful words requiring individual efforts and action that lead to amazing and blessed results. I get caught up in my own head at times and begin to think that folks are SUPPOSED TO KNOW what I want or need. Now, maybe it’s different for you, but when this doesn’t happen I then begin to get resentful and wonder why they are ignoring me. It’s the same with our relationship with Christ. Even though God knows our thoughts even before we form them, He still needs us to participate with our will, words, and actions in order to give us what we need or get us to where we need to be. How’s that working out for you? Are you asking, seeking, and providing the effort and actions to make your needs known to God? … Check your experience… “We found that God does not make too hard terms with those who seek Him.” Big Book pg 46 Lord, let us be willing in our hearts to provide the needed actions, efforts, and words to do our part and be in Your will, AMEN. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7 Have a blessed day y’all! How’s your footing? … Sometimes we find ourselves on rocky, cluttered, or unstable paths as we try to walk. When we encounter these challenges we usually become a bit more wary of each step and sometimes consider changing our path. We don’t necessarily need to change the goal or the destination, but perhaps change the way we are trying to get there. We can and will encounter some unstable paths in our Spiritual walk as well. It’s in those times we can look to the Holy Spirit to guide us and set us on a clear and more stable path instead of trying to seek an easier softer way on our own. How to you find firm footing spiritually? … Check your experience… “Established on such a footing we became less and less interested in ourselves, our little plans and designs.” Big Book pg 63 Lord, let us look to You to establish our footing when we find ourselves on shaky ground, AMEN. “You cleared the ground under me so my footing was firm.” 2 Samuel 22:37 Have a blessed day y’all! Faith it till ya make it…. Have you heard the term “blind faith” or maybe even the expression of “taking something on faith”? It seems this faith thing has some powerful pull to it. Most of us take many things daily by faith without even thinking about it. When we put the key into the car ignition, we assume it will start, or when flip a light switch or use the remote to our TV, we naturally expect it to turn on. Why is it then that we seem to demand proof of other things before they happen. Now maybe it’s different for you, but I seldom get into a debate over my car starting, or feel the need to have an engineer come to our home to tell me that our light switch will work before I try. So why is it then do we at times, myself included, DEMAND that God show us proof of success before we attempt something new or uncomfortable. Just look at the sun, the sky and feel the air we breathe! We use faith daily, isn’t it time we give God more credit with our faith in Him?... Check your experience… . “In one form or another we had been living by faith and little else.” Big Book pg 54 Lord, let us have the same faith in You as we have in our car keys and light switches because You never fail us, AMEN. “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” Hebrews 11:1 Have a blessed day y’all! Foreign gods of today. ... What do you worship? Believe it or not, but some folks blindly serve another god in the form of money, work, or a material possession. Heck, some of us might even worship another human; like a movie star, athlete, or even obsess on a personal relationship. Now don't get me wrong, it's great to have nice things and healthy personal relationships, but are we allowing those things and persons to become our gods? Do we spend a large amount of time focusing our thoughts, energies, and efforts attempting to please or serve them? I am a firm believer of the spiritual principle that your heart exists where your thoughts reside. ...Check your experience. .... "God either is or He isn't. What was our choice to be?" Big Book pg 53. Lord, let us focus our thoughts on Your will and not fall into false worship of the people, places, and things around us, AMEN. "The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him." If you are going through hell…keep on going… Back in Sacramento, years ago, ol’ Dick B. used to say in the AA meetings, “Don’t turn a bad moment into a bad day.” I have held onto that thought over the years and found that when I am in times of stress or struggle, that this thought gets me through it. While some situations last longer than a moment, I have learned that I am not facing it alone and that when I turn my troubles and fears over to the Lord, not only does my day go better, but also, the situation usually resolves itself and leaves me in a better place as a result. Are you allowing bad moments to become bad days? … Check your experience….“In this book you read again and again that faith did for us what we could not do for ourselves.” Big Book pgs 70-71 Lord, what times of uncertainty, stress, or struggle come, remind my heat that You are with me and I can turn it over to Your care and not let it run my whole day, AMEN. “I know how great this makes you feel, even though you have to put up with every kind of aggravation in the meantime. Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine.” 1 Peter 1:6-7 have a blessed day y’all! Start your day on a positive note! It’s an inside job…. People who are living with grace, joy, and peace have that happy glow about them. What I have learned is that they get this glow from the happiness that exists inside of them. It’s not from winning the lottery, or being a millionaire, or even having those material things that we feel at times we just have to have. Yes, those things bring a different kind of happiness. It’s from know that, no matter what, they are covered, protected, and blessed by God. His Holy Spirit lives in each of us and that is how He is able to bless us abundantly. Our part is to merely seek and do His will on a daily basis. In living our faith in a way that others can see, we are allowing God to work through us to help others. Are you doing your part?… Check your experience. … “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8 Lord, thank You for the abundance of blessings in our lives. Using the correct power source … Human beings are amazing creatures. When we want something we usually and naturally use our own power to provide the correct effort to gain it. On occasion when that fails, we apply more of our own power through effort and self-will to make it happen. Sometimes it does and sometimes it does not happen. Over the years I have learned by experience that the problem is not our lack of power. The problem is our lack of using the right Power source to make sure we are seeking the correct thing for us. Just because it’s new and shiny does not necessarily mean we have to have it right now. Just because the guy on TV tells us we need it to make our lives better does not mean that it’s the truth. Tap into the power of God and watch a new world of possibility, abundance, and grace open up for you! … Check your experience. … “But where and how were we to find this Power?” Big Book pg 45 Lord let Your power lead, guide, and direct our thoughts, will, actions, and words, AMEN. “With God’s power working in us, God can do much, much more than anything we can ask or imagine.” Ephesians 3:20 Have a blessed day y’all! Work is one of them 4 letter words…..Work seems to be a heavy word. There are things in life we must do that we don’t necessarily enjoy that require work. From simple things like laundry to complex things like car maintenance (well… it’s very complex for me!) the work required may not be enjoyable but we know it’s needed. On the other hand, each of us possess talents and skills that we enjoy and because of our passions for them, it doesn’t feel like work. What is your passion or talent that you gain enjoyment and satisfaction from doing? These are just a part of the many gifts God has given us. … Check your experience…. “It works, if we have the proper attitude and work at it.” Big Book pg 86 Lord let our hearts be reminded that while most work is necessary, we do have talents and gifts that bring us pleasure in some of our work, AMEN. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” Matthew 9:37-38 Have a blessed day y’all!! Start your day on a positive note! Got faith? ... Except for electricians and engineers, can we absolutely and completely explain why the light comes on when we touch the switch? We have faith from our experience that it will. Same thing with starting our computers and cars, we can't entirely explain it but we have faith from our experience that it will work. Now what about God? I can't speak for you but through my life experiences and His grace and Word, I know my faith is based on a real and loving God. How about you? ... Check your experience. ... "We finally saw that faith in some kind of God was a part of our make-up, just as much as the feeling we have for a friend." Big Book pg 55. Lord, let us grow our faith through daily contact with You through prayer and Your Word, AMEN. "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see..." One stop shopping…. We stop at many places for many things most days. We go to the coffee shop for our coffee, the juice place for our smoothies, the cleaners for our clothes, the healthy market for our specialty foods, and the grocery store for the rest! We travel many places to get many things to help us in our daily lives! What about our spiritual lives? It is comforting to know that all we need is contained in one book and we can usually get spiritually fed through studying and learning The Book with other believers. How is that working out for you? Where are you getting your spiritual food? …. Check your experience…. . “Assuming we are spiritually fit, we can do all sorts of things” Big Book pg 100 Lord, let us look to Your Word to learn and apply the truths in our lives to give us our spiritual nourishment, AMEN. “Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 Have a blessed day y’all! Start your day on a positive note! Freedom is not free…. As we celebrate with family and friends today, please remember our soldiers who made and make our way of life possible along with the biblical principles our Founding Fathers used to build the foundation of our great nation upon. “For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” 2 Corinthians 3:17 Lord, let us remember that our freedom is a privilege and a part of the heritage we receive from You, AMEN. “We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.” Big Book pg 83 Have a blessed day y’all! Guard your words and walk your talk… Perhaps it’s different for you and I hope it is, but I spent many years reacting on emotions and allowing words fueled by fear, insecurity, and pride escape from my mouth before sensibility, reason, and wisdom had a chance to respond. My failure to control my words led to all sorts of situations where I had to amend, apologize, and suffer the consequences. When I finally learned to respond rather than react, I found not only less stress and chaos in my life, but also learned that this is where the Holy Spirt in us can speak into our hearts and show us not only the words we should use, but also the actions we need to back these words. Are you reaction or responding? … Check your experience. … “Our behavior will convince them more than our words.” Big Book pg 83 Lord, thank you for the reminder that while small, our tongue is mighty and we must watch our words, AMEN. “Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.” James 3: 2-5 Have a blessed day y’all! Start your day on a positive note! So where does fear come from?.. Fear is one of those 4 letter words that cause discomfort and pain. It’s interesting to me to see the power this word has over our lives. Now perhaps it’s different for you, but my experience has shown me that when this 4 letter word enters into my thoughts, if left unchecked and unchallenged, it can cause all sorts of troubles for me and those around me. Over the years I have learned that the best way for me to deal with fear is to track it to its source. More often than not that source is me and my attitudes, perceptions, and insecurities. When I am able to see that the fear is not real but based on my own making, then I am able to give the fear to God in exchange for His grace, guidance, and love. How are you handling your fears?.. Check your experience... “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 Lord, let us give you our fears in exchange for your guidance, grace, and love, AMEN. “We ask Him to remove our fear and direct our attention to what He would have us be.” Big Book pg 68 Have a blessed day y’all! All kinds of ‘fire works’ … As most folks begin to celebrate the 4th of July, fireworks are a part of our American tradition. From innocent sparklers to all kinds of sophisticated and fancy explosives, we find a way to add noise and light up the night skies. Light cancels the darkness and this time of years we get to see many colorful and amazing types of light. We also have another source of Light that dwells within us. The Holy Spirit lights up our life through Jesus and His fire work banishes the darkness that tries to take over and control our lives. All we have to do is open our hearts to Him and He will do the rest. …Check your experience… “If we still cling to something we will not let go, we ask God to help us be willing.” Big Book pg 76 Lord, let us light up our lives with the fireworks You so freely provide us through Jesus, AMEN. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;” Isaiah 9:2 Have a blessed day y’all!
