Sunday / Resurrection Day is coming! … Even though we seem to see a lot of questioning, and political challenges to our Christian faith today, Jesus faced even more intense opposition and persecution during His time. The various leaders of the time were out to protect either their religious and or military power. They were determined to not let this popular renegade named Jesus become a symbol of challenge, start a cause, and bring cultural change. Thank goodness even their best efforts could not stop the power of God! Empires have tried to bury and destroy the gospel for centuries, but no one can keep Jesus’ body in the grave. His resurrection power lives on and is spreading across the earth! It’s apparent in the lives of all who believe and take Jesus as their personal Savior. All I can share with you is to compare your own life before and after you accepted Christ as your Savior. My life is blessed beyond my wildest dreams since I began walking with Jesus and following His Word many years ago. …..Please, check your own experience…. . “What seemed at first a flimsy reed, has proved to be the loving and powerful hand of God.” Big Book pg 28. Lord, thank You for Jesus and the promise of eternal life when we make Him our Lord and Savior, AMEN. “So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first. Take a guard, Pilate answered. Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” Matthew 27:64-65 Have a blessed day y'all! We have not experienced a time, season, or situation like this in our lifetimes. So why is it called GOOD Friday and not Friday MOURNING?.. If today is the day that Jesus died on the cross, what is so good about that? Because of something so very bad happening on this day, we have all received something eternally and forever good. The tragedy and horror of Jesus’ death followed 2 days later with His resurrection resulted in the eternal and everlasting opportunity for anyone and everyone who turns to God, through Jesus Christ, to be forgiven from their sins and to receive eternal life. So the great part of today is that what happened long ago can give anyone who asks eternal life. Those of us who believe and receive this know from our experience of getting to know Jesus through His Word and because the Holy Spirit enters our life and shows us a whole new way to think and live…. Check your experience …. “To us, the Realm of Spirit is broad, roomy, all inclusive; never exclusive or forbidding to those who earnestly seek.” Big Book pg 46. Lord, thank you for the ultimate sacrifice for our sins to give us eternal life, AMEN. “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:30 Have a blessed day y'all!! We have not experienced a time, season, or situation like this in our lifetimes. Just like an Ever-Ready battery.... We have many folks who spend their lives in a state of readiness to protect, help, and serve us in our times of danger and need. From our military at home and abroad to our police, fire, and medical folks, we have a buffer of safety, comfort, and protection ALWAYS available for us. Now what about us regular folk? What really lays in our hearts and keeps our minds in a quiet yet alert state of readiness? Before turning my will and life over to the care of God through Jesus, my readiness was only focused on what I thought I could GET for me. Now days, with the Holy Spirit guiding my life and, in my heart, I enjoy and honor a quiet awareness to the needs of others. These days I enjoy being able to be the "Ever Ready" supplier of support and encouragement for those closest to me. What is your state of readiness based on? ... Check your experience. ... "We had to ask ourselves why we shouldn't apply to our human problems this same readiness to change." Big Book pg 52. Lord thank You for the lamp of readiness to serve that is in our hearts to be used according to Your will not ours, AMEN. “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning," Luke 12:35 Have a blessed day y’all! Are we clean on the inside? .... No matter how many times we wash and wax our cars it will neither cure nor fix any engine problems. Now most of us understand this and that is why we change oil frequently and find a garage or mechanic we can trust to keep our cars running well. Are we doing the same for our internal spiritual engine? It's great to be all dressed up and cleaned up on the outside but that doesn't fix our inner mental and spiritual health. Most folks can see through our superficial look good to feel our brokenness. Who is your spiritual mechanic? ... Check your experience. .... "Our sound reasoning failed to hold us in check." Big Book pg 37. Lord let us bring our hearts and minds to you daily for a spiritual checkup and refreshment, AMEN. "First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too.” Matthew 23:26 Have a blessed Day y’all! It ain’t all about me. … There are times when my head tries to convince me of the illusion that it (whatever “it” is) is all about me. Generally I discover that I am a victim of this delusion when I become frustrated that things are not going exactly as I think they should be. Thank goodness I have the grace available to me through the Holy Spirit to check myself to discover that I am in self-will and it ain’t about me. When I accept this, I refocus my attitudes and look to see what I can bring to the situation instead of trying to see what I can get out of it. The amazing thing is that it then goes far better than I imagined in my selfish self-centered mind! …Check your experience. … “But be sure you are on solid spiritual ground before you start and that your motive in going is thoroughly good. Do not think of what you will get out of the occasion. Think of what you can bring to it.” Big Book pg 102 Lord, thank you for the grace that the Holy Spirit brings us to remind us that self-will can be deceptive and Your will can show us the truth, AMEN. "Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude." 1Peter 3:8 Have a blessed day y’all! Learning to rely….. We learn from an early age to rely on others. As children we rely on adults to keep us healthy, safe, and to help us grow. As adults we learn that self- reliance only takes us so far and we need to rely on people, places, and things to get through our daily journey. This is a good plan but we are only as good as what it is we rely upon. Think about it. People are human after all and prone to failures and mistakes. Places can change due to the people in them or economic circumstances. Things like electronics get outdated and even obsolete. So the question is what can we rely upon that never changes and always is in step with our lives? Maybe it’s different for you, but the answer for me and my house has been, is, and will forever be to rely on our relationship with God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit… Check your experience… “When we saw others solve their problems by a simple reliance upon the Spirit of the Universe, we had to stop doubting the power of God.” Big Book pg 52 Lord, let us learn to rely on You and trust Your presences and guidance in our lives, AMEN. “…we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God,” 2 Corinthians 1:9 Have a blessed day y’all! That Personal Trainer at the Spiritual Gym… It seems just about everyone has a physical fitness routine they try to follow. From gym memberships to hiking, biking, or running, most folks I know are doing something daily to keep their bodies healthy and in shape. The point is that physical fitness involving diet and exercise is now a part of our culture. Being physically healthy is something we need to own but what about our spiritual health? How are we building up our spiritual fitness? The good news is that just like our physical fitness routines, we can keep spiritually fit too. Daily time spent in the Word, prayer, as well as frequent contact with other believers can and does build up our spiritual fitness. What does your daily spiritual fitness routine include?.. Check your experience… “Assuming we are spiritually fit, we can do all sorts of things” Big Book pg 100 Lord, let us grow spiritually healthy through daily time spent in Your Word and in prayer, AMEN. “Exercise daily in God—no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. You can count on this. Take it to heart.” 1Timothy 4:8-9 Have a blessed day y’all! We have not experienced a time, season, or situation like this in our lifetimes. How about a daily dose of hope and inspired thought? Have you ever noticed that you are drawn to certain types of people naturally? Maybe it's different for you but I tend to gravitate towards folks who are naturally positive and open. I have learned over the years that this is a subconscious act we have within us. In my case it's because I want the positivity that they have. I am seeking the Holy Spirit that is shining through them. What type of person do you find yourself drawn to? ... Check your experience… "... for deep down in every man, woman, and child, is the fundamental idea of God." Big Book pg 55 Lord let Your Spirit shine through us so that others can seek, see, and experience Your Light and grace, AMEN. We gotta supply the mustard. .... There is a good story about prayer I learned long ago. Its a reflective question and goes something like this; If you sit in a dark closet all alone and pray for a hot dog, will God bring you one? Now unless you live under a rock you know the obvious answer is no. Hopefully your prayers give you the willingness to get up and provide your own action to go and get the hot dog. This concept is applicable other things in our lives. Prayer opens our heart to provide the actions and efforts on our part needed to bring about the changes we are seeking. When my actions and efforts match what I am praying for, good things happen… Check your experience… . "Faith without works is dead." Big Book pg 88 Lord, please remind us that You can and will answer prayers but we must supply the willingness in our efforts and actions, AMEN. “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James 2: 14-17 Have a blessed Day y’all! Start your day on a positive note! Daily devotions from the Big Book and Bible combined! It ain't about the stuff we gain..... Whoever dies with the most toys DOES NOT win. It's common practice for us to try to measure our success in ourselves and others by the size and amount of stuff we have. The problem with this standard is that it's an illusion of the truth. Whenever I find myself slipping back into this type of thinking I also tend to become less satisfied with what I already have as well as falsely base my happiness on the need to gain more stuff. Perhaps it's different for you, but my hope is that you are not measuring your worth to others and God based on the material stuff you have. God and others who really matter in our lives love us for who we are and not for what stuff we have. ... Check your experience… "In the realm of the material, men's minds were fettered by superstition, tradition, and all sort of fixed ideas." Big Book pg 51. Lord please let us see that our worth is based on what's in our hearts and not by the stuff we acquire, AMEN. "For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out." 1 Timothy 6:7 Have a blessed day y'all!! We remain free through serving others… This is an odd concept yet for those of us who have experienced serving someone or something out of the kindness of our hearts with no expectation of return get it. Think about it for a moment. Every day we naturally help, assist, or give a hand to someone or something. From parents caring for their children’s needs to yielding the right of way to another while we walk or drive, we are instinctually serving. It’s part of our nature. The Spiritual principle supporting this is the fact that through serving others, we are humbling ourselves to put another’s needs before our wants. The feeling you get is immeasurable when you do something for someone who can never pay you back. Helping others, does in fact, help ourselves…Check your experience… “Helping others is the foundation stone” Big Book pg 97 Lord, let us exercise and grow our freedom through helping others, AMEN. “For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Galatians 5:13 Have a blessed day y’all! Exchanging the truth for a lie… Part of being human and having free will is dealing with the constant challenges we face daily for our attention and focus. There are all kinds and types of never-ending noise around us attempting to grab our attention and take us hostage emotionally. We are led to believe by many tricksters, scammers, and false prophets that their product or service will fix us and make us complete. It never ends, or so it seems. ... The gift of free will is given to us so that we can consciously choose what we focus on and what we allow to grab our attention. The person, place, thing, or situation that we allow to dominate our mind will eventually invade our heart and drive our behaviors. It becomes our God. So the suggestion I want to make today is to take a long look in the mirror and ask ourselves, what or who is our God? ... Check your experience. ... "we had to fearlessly face the proposition that either God is everything or else He is nothing." Big Book pg 53 Lord let us open our hearts and minds daily to turn our will and lives over to You to be free of the worldly false Gods, AMEN. "They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator." Romans 1:25 Have a blessed Day y’all! Leading by example. ... It seems to be an American cultural norm that we all have to "make it to the top" of whatever work or career path we are on. The media and marketing that we are exposed to on all fronts seems to equate success with clothes, cars, and other material trappings far above what most of us can honestly afford. “More is Better!” seems to be the subliminal message of success. The truth is that more is not better. While we need to support ourselves and our families, true success comes from becoming great stewards of what we are given and how we support and serve those around us. Jesus came to serve, not be served. He came to show us that there is eternal life through Him. Our faith in God grows when we learn the truth in His word and become in tune to those people, places, things, and situations He puts in our lives. ...Check your experience. ... "How can I best serve Thee? Thy will (not mine) be done." Big Book pg. 85 Lord, let us lead by serving and let us measure our success through our stewardship of the blessings you give us, AMEN. "But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted." Matthew 23: 11-12 Have a blessed day y’all! Choose your words. ... Words can either heal, help, or hurt, depending on how we choose to use them. One of the things we can't recall, rewind, or take back are the words that come flying from our mouths fueled by fear, anger, or other emotions of the moment. I have learned painfully over the years that it's best for me to not let the emotions of the moment inside of me fuel my words. I have found that when, instead of letting my emotions of the moment lead the charge of my “verbal vomit”, I quietly give the words to God and let the Holy Spirit guide my emotions and quiet my will, that I use better words for the situation. ... Check your experience. ... "Patience, tolerance, understanding and love are the watchwords." Big Book pg 118. Lord let the words we choose be fueled with love, kindness, and encouragement, AMEN. All we gotta do is ask?!?... Maybe it’s different for you, but I have a real hard time asking for help. I am not talking about my ministry and all our volunteer projects, I mean asking for help with my personal flaws and shortcomings. It’s easy to help others but sometimes it’s hard for me to help myself, let alone ask for assistance. This is pride and fear at work. They block the Holy Spirit from helping by filling my mind with self-centered thoughts of fear and shame, preventing my heart from showing me the path to the truth. When I finally block the pride and quiet the fear to ask for help, things not only get better, but also I get to learn that I am not alone in my shortcomings. Jesus makes it easy for us to ask for help, but our pride, fear, shame, and even anger prevent us from receiving His grace and help…Check your experience… “We had to have God's help.” Big Book pg 62 Lord, let us drop the rocks of pride, fear, and anger to allow Your Holy Spirit to help and heal us, AMEN. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7 Have a blessed day y'all! We get out of it what we put into it. ... Here is a twist of thinking I learned long ago that has not only helped me to grow as a person, and as God's kid, but also has helped me to be more in tune to the needs of others. It’s very simple. Instead of seeing what I can get from every interaction I have with people, places, things, and or situations; I see what I can bring to it. The feeling is amazing, and the outcome is usually better than I expect, plus I have gotten to know people on a deeper level! It changed my perspective and now instead of having expectations of how I think things should go, I now have blessed peace just looking to see how I can help. Go on, give it a try and as always....Check your experience… "But be sure you are on solid spiritual ground before you start and that your motive in going is thoroughly good. Do not think of what you will get out of the occasion. Think of what you can bring to it." Big Book pg 102 Lord, let us see what we can bring to a situation instead of always looking to see what we can get from it, AMEN. "Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them.” Matthew 7:12 Have a blessed day y'all!! Charity begins at home. ...This is one of the best thought tools I have come to rely on over the years. The version I learned was phrased like this; "You can’t keep it unless you give it away." It's an action thought that has never failed me since I began my walk with Christ and in sobriety. Unless I am willing to help another, I am not in a true position to spiritually receive the gifts the Lord blesses me with. Now this doesn't mean we should give away everything we have, or start a crusade to end world homelessness, but it does mean that each day we should open the eyes of our hearts to see how we can best be of service to someone around us. ...Check your experience…. "Helping others is the foundation stone" Big Book pg. 97. Lord, please open the eyes of our heart daily to see how we can best serve another, AMEN. "…that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." There is one thing that doesn't change. .... Change is constant in our world. Styles change, seasons change, tastes change, and our preferences change too. Change never seems to stop, and it can be confusing. I still miss having a cassette deck in my car and my mullet! The differences of will… It can get confusing at times and even hard at other times trying to figure out if we are seeking God’s will for us or merely doing our own will while thinking God approves. To add to this confusion, there are many examples around us daily showing us the illusion that we are doing the “right thing” by either throwing money or support to help with a common good. For example, just check out some of the larger mega charities and see how much actually goes to what they claim to be helping or, other than their own employees, what “jobs” does Goodwill really provide for the “local community”? Now maybe it’s different for you, but I tend to fall into the illusion that what I am doing is God’s will when it’s merely my selfish will hidden under false motives. My head wants me to believe I can pull one over on God by talking it up or putting on the ol’ “look good”. Nevertheless, the only true way that I know I am in God’s will and not my own is when I am focused on the action, task, thought, service, or deed in this moment and not thinking about the outcome and how it benefits me…Check your experience… “Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God’s will into all of our activities. “How can I best serve Thee-Thy will (not mine) be done.” Big Book pg 85 Lord, let us open our hearts to allow Your will to be not only what we seek, but what we know to be true, AMEN. “He said, Father, You can do all things. What does worry gain us? ... Maybe it's different for you but worry has never brought me anything good. It's a part of my self-will fed by fear, anxiety, pride, jealousy, and or anger. When I am consumed with worry I am blocking out God's will and His grace that can bring comfort and relief. How's that working out for you? Check your experience… "a spiritual way of living, thus relieving much worry and suffering." Big Book pg 159. Lord please remind our hearts that worry robs us of Your grace and peace. We can give our worries to you and be free, AMEN. "...do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.
